Nonetheless, they r e m a i n o u t s t a n d i n g instances o f the
"artist's h o m e " , and thus a place associated w i t h his oeuvre by
means o f assorted bonds, creating his m i l i e u - the complex of
i n s p i r a t i o n and the c o n t e x t o f reception.

Texts by Juliusz O s t e r w a , w h i c h the a u t h o r has gathered i n
his book Reduta i teatr. Artykuły - Wywiady - Wspomnienia
1914-1947 (Reduta a n d the T h e a t r e . A r t i c l e s - I n t e r v i e w s Reminiscences 1914-1947, W r o c l a w 1991), were never
i n t e n d e d as a t e x t b o o k addressed to actors a n d directors.
N o r d o they c o n t a i n t e c h n i c a l remarks or records o f actors'
t r a i n i n g . T h e presented p u b l i c a t i o n is p r i m a r i l y a register o f
the traces o f Osterwa's creative p a t h , left b e h i n d by h i m i n
the course o f 33 years. T h e actor, director, c o - f o u n d e r o f the
Reduta T h e a t r e a n d its head, constitutes a p r o m i n e n t
chapter i n the history o f the theatre and for some still
remains a v i t a l i n s p i r a t i o n . U l t i m a t e l y , every a u t h e n t i c
Polish theatre c o m p a n y is c o m p e l l e d to c o n f r o n t the Reduta
experiences and declare its stand towards t h e m : as c i t h e r
pro or con. T h e r e is simply n o t o t h e r way to act. T h i s is the
reason w h y the a u t h o r considered i t i m p o r t a n t to salvage as
m u c h as possible of Osterwa's statements, either w r i t t e n or
made i n assorted i n t e r v i e w s . A f t e r a l l , we can never tell
w h a t , a n d w h e n w i l l p r o v e valuable. C e r t a i n strongly
embedded stereotypes o f a p p r o a c h i n g b o t h O s t e r w a and the
Reduta T h e a t r e i n c l u d e the o f t repeated, even up to this
very day, o p i n i o n t h a t the most i n t e r e s t i n g a n d i m p o r t a n t
was the First Warsaw Reduta f r o m 1919-1925. W h y c a n n o t
the same be said a b o u t t h e W i l n o R e d u t a ( 1 9 2 5 1929/1931), the Warsaw Reduta I n s t i t u t e (1931-1939) or
projects o f the " D a l " a n d "Geneza" theatrical fraternities
d a t i n g f r o m the occupation? A n o t h e r such stereotype is the
c o n v i c t i o n t h a t the Reduta staged exclusively a Polish
especially inspirations i n the closer and m o r e distant past.
A l m o s t all the questions posed i n Reduta i teatr appear to be
still very m u c h topical, even i f their w o r d i n g
m i g h t seem
slightly anachronic. T h e most significant ones are: 1 . w h a t is
the nature of the creative theatrical company? 2. w h a t does
" t h e ethos o f a c o m p a n y " denote? 3. w h a t is the role played
by the headAeader of the company? 4- w h a t is the essence of
cooperation between the director and the actor? 5. w h a t
about the nature of actor's w o r k d e v o t e d to his role? 6. w h a t
is the present-day m e a n i n g of "social engagement" i n art, i n
other words, the theatre conceived a n d practised as a service?
T h e title o f this article i n t e n t i o n a l l y refers to V s e v o l o d
M e y e r h o l d ' s article f r o m 1921: Odinochiestvo Stanislavskogo
( T h e Loneliness of Stanislavski), at the t i m e n o t translated
i n t o P o l i s h . S u c h a r e f e r e n c e conceals a p r o f o u n d
c o n v i c t i o n t h a t against the b a c k d r o p o f the Polish theatre
and artistic c u l t u r e of the p e r i o d the endeavours pursued by
O s t e r w a and the Reduta T h e a t r e were a n isolated, a l t h o u g h
by n o means f u t i l e , effort.

C o l u m b u s ) , composed of: Atlantyk-Pacyfik ( 1 9 6 6 ) , Królik
i oceany (Rabbit a n d Oceans, 1968), a n d W pępku Ameryki
( I n t h e N a v e l o f A m e r i c a , 1969). N a t u r a l l y , W a ń k o wicz's w o r l d o u t l o o k is far f r o m u n i f o r m a n d does n o t yield
a d e d u c t i v e system. Its f u n d a m e n t a l elements i n c l u d e a de
s c r i p t i o n o f (a) technocracy, whose best developed f o r m is
to be f o u n d i n the U n i t e d States; (b) the c o n f l i c t b e t w e e n
technocracy a n d organic c u l t u r e , „civilisation„ a n d „culture„; (c) the ways a n d means o f t r a n s f o r m i n g organic c u l t u r e
i n t o its t e c h n o c r a t i c c o u n t e r p a r t ; (d) the positive and nega
tive aspects o f technocracy a n d organic c u l t u r e ; (e) the
c o n f l i c t b e t w e e n values venerated i n technocracy; (f) the
obstacles e n c o u n t e r e d by technocracy ( b o t h inscribed i n its
d e v e l o p m e n t a n d e x t e r n a l barriers); (g) the strategy used by

Anna Spiss, O n the Usefulness of "Rubbish"
T h e article considers
the original o u t f i t t i n g o f a flat and
staircase i n an o l d t o w n house i n the Kazimierz district of
Cracow. T h e author and executor is one of the residents,
Stefan L., a house painter and stove fitter by profession. T h e
interiors, and especially the staircase, were embellished by
resorting to various gadgets, gaily coloured packaging and food
and industrial containers, old calendars, reproductions o f
pictures, etc. T h e ensuing composition yielded particular
sequences o n g i v e n themes, e.g. p o l i t i c s , sports, or
m o n u m e n t s . Together w i t h his wife, the a u t h o r arranged next
to the house a garden (to be seen today) i n t e n d e d for c h i l d r e n ,
repertoire, w h i l e Osinski's b o o k shows t h a t one o f the
c o n s t a n t features o f the c o m p a n y headed by O s t e r w a a n d
Mieczysław L i m a n o w s k i was its readiness a n d openness to
accept changes, a n d the fact t h a t i t f o u n d itself i n a
p e r e n n i a l statu nascendi, as e v i d e n c e d by three successive
Reduta Statutes.

the interior decoration was n o t l i q u i d a t e d . True, his artistic
proposals have n o t been emulated, b u t they c o n t i n u e to enjoy
the approval of the occupants of the house as well as passcrsby
and tourists.
