Reduta i teatr makes t h e reader aware o f Osterwa's
distinctness i n the history o f the Polish theatre a n d theatrical

T h e amateur-architect originated i n England, where d u r i n g

fact t h a t i t is possible to indicate various analogies a n d

the first h a l f o f the eighteenth century there appeared
realisations of the "literary house", i . e. architecture shaped as
an artistic concept o f the writer. T h e house, the palace and
the castle were n o longer the image of the w o r l d , a reflection
and a symbol of cosmic order; they became the r e f l e c t i o n o f a
private order. T h e house as the seat o f private dreams became
increasingly frequently the auteur w o r k of the owner, a feat
achieved just as often by ignoring norms b i n d i n g at the t i m e .
T h e a u t h o r analyses the residences o f A l e x a n d e r Pope i n

A l l these objects c o n s t i t u t e realisations o f conceptions
devised by the writers, a n d to a lesser or greater degree
discarded the a r c h i t e c t u r a l n o r m s o f the p e r i o d .
T h i s tendency towards architecture n o t conceived i n an

F o n t h i l l A b b e y a n d Strawberry H i l l : despite the p a r t i c i p a t i o n
o f architects, the buildings remained the s u b l i m a t i o n of
literature. N e i t h e r the Pope residence n o r any other examples
can be i n c l u d e d i n t o the history proper o f the artists' studios.
Nonetheless, they r e m a i n o u t s t a n d i n g instances o f the

Reduta T h e a t r e a n d its head, constitutes a p r o m i n e n t

the nature of the creative theatrical company? 2. w h a t does

about the nature of actor's w o r k d e v o t e d to his role? 6. w h a t
