O n e of t h e o l d c u s t o m s w h i c h has s u r v i v e d i n t h e
K u r p i e r e g i o n d o w n t o t h e p r e s e n t d a y is t h a t o f t a
k i n g p a l m s to c h u r c h on P a l m S u n d a y .
T h e p a l m s a r e a r e m i n d e r o f Jesus C h r i s t ' s e n t r y
i n J e r u s a l e m b u t t h e y also h a v e i n t h e p a s t b e e n u s e d
as m a g i c h e a l i n g d e v i c e s to p r o t e c t a n i m a l s f r o m b a d
s p i r i t s a n d i l l n e s s , to e n s u r e g o o d h a r v e s t s a n d p r o
t e c t t h e f i e l d s f r o m h a i l stones.
T h e p a l m s w h i c h also a p p e a r i n o t h e r p a r t s o f t h e
country are exceptionally h i g h in the K u r p i e region
w h e r e t h e y a r e f r o m one t o seven m e t r e s h i g h . ( L y s e )
W i t o j e on the wooden stick are made f r o m forrest or
marshland plants like the w i d l a k (lycopodium), heather
bell (Calluna vulgaris), the w i l l o w (salix), the b i l b e r r y
( v a c c i n i u m v i t i s i d a e a ) . T h e t o p of t h e s t i c k w a s a l
ways f i x e d w i t h a b u n c h o f pines. A m o n g the plants
w h i c h i n t h e p a s t w e r e to m a k e u p t h e p a l m s t h e r e
were many which had widely k n o w n medical appli
cations. W o m e n m a d e u p the palms. T h e colour o f t h e
p a l m w a s d e c i d e d b y t h e v a r i o u s shades of t h e p l a n t s
used. F l o w e r s w e r e m a d e f r o m t h e w h i t e c e n t r e of
b u l r u s h e s . L a t e r c o l o u r e d p a p e r c a m e to be used. T h e
f l o w e r s w e r e a l w a y s f i x e d a l o n g t h e shaft o f t h e p a l m
w i t h care t a k e n as t o t h e c h o i c e o f c o l o u r . R i b b o n s
w e r e f i x e d t o t h e t o p of t h e p a l m .
T h e a u t h o r distinguishes various k i n d s of p a l m
depending on the m a t e r i a l out o f w h i c h t h e y w e r e m a
d e : 1. s m a l l o n e s m a d e o u t o f t w i g s , 2. t h o s e m a d e f r o m
p l a n t s w h i c h a r e at p r e s e n t p r o t e c t e d , 3. f r o m h e a t h e r
b e l l , b i l b e r r i e s , j u n i p e r , p i n e a n d s p r u c e b r a n c h e s , 4.
m o u n t e d ( t h e c e n t r e p o l e h a d holes i n t o w h i c h t w i g s

T h e a u t h o r describes her cut outs f r o m t h e various
p e r i o d s i n h e r l i f e a n d he s h o w s t h e i n f l u e n c e s w h i c h
she c a m e u n d e r f r o m c u r r e n t f a s h i o n s w h i l e r e m e m b e
r i n g the t r a d i t i o n a l forms.
The a u t h o r encouraged her to r e t u r n to these f o r m s
w h i l e r e t a i n i n g h e r o w n o r i g i n a l s t y l e . F r o m 1973 o n
